100 students' parents protest

SURABAYA: Around 100 parents of students at Santa Theresia
Catholic Elementary School on Jl. Kalijudan staged a protest on
Wednesday, opposing the arbitrary increase of school fees.

They demanded that the foundation managing the school review
its decision to increase fees by between 100 percent and 150
percent, which they said was irrational.

The protesters, mostly housewives, carried banners and
distributed brochures.

The parents finally met with Yohanes Foundation chairman
Father Surahno and school principal Veronica Sumarni to discuss
the matter. The foundation asked for one week to consider the
protesters' demand.

Budi, said during the meeting that the increase of her child's
school fees started six months ago without notification.

"Previously I paid Rp 54,000 per month and now I have to pay
Rp 109,500," Budi said, adding that her child was in fifth grade.
