100 old and rare cloths on display

JAKARTA: More than 100 old and rare traditional cloths owned by private collectors will be on display at the Lobby Lounge of the Bimasena Club at South Jakarta's Dharmawangsa Hotel.

A lecture on traditional cloths, featuring cultural expert Tony Tack, will be given on Feb. 16 and Feb. 18 at 10 a.m., with an entrance fee of Rp 50,000 (US$4.9).

The Rare and Unusual Textiles of the Indonesian Archipelago Exhibition will feature a 2.5-meter Kain Panjang (long cloth) worn by Central Java's Surakarta king Pakubuwono X and also a 75- year-old Kain Tirtanadi from Bali.

Indonesian traditional cloths, especially batik, are known all over the world for their unique motifs and patterns.

The exhibition, which aims to create greater awareness and appreciation of the cloths, will run from Feb. 16 to Feb. 25 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. -- JP
