100 Aceh policemen punished

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Administrative and legal sanctions have been imposed on at least 100 policemen for various offenses, Aceh Police chief Ins. Gen. Yusuf Manggabarani said on Thursday.

Speaking at a celebration marking the 57th anniversary of the police's Mobile Brigade, Yusuf said 20 of the officers were waiting to go on trial in the North Aceh District Court in connection with an arson attack on shophouses in Seuneddon district last September.

"They deserve to be punished for their crimes," Yusuf asserted.

He said the attack was triggered by an incident in which an officer was wounded near the shophouses. "We'll discharge them as soon as they have been proven guilty," he said. --JP
