10 USU Students Report Alleged Harassment, University Intervenes

Ten female students at the University of North Sumatra (USU) have allegedly become victims of sexual harassment perpetrated by a student from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) with the initials CHS. The alleged perpetrator is accused of carrying out harassment, both verbally and via social media. The USU rectorate immediately responded to the case after it went viral online. The victims have reportedly submitted official complaints to the university. “After receiving the initial information, FEB USU immediately coordinated with the FEB USU Student Executive Board (BEM) as the party assisting the complaint process. Subsequently, on Thursday, 9 July 2026, the victims attended the faculty to submit their complaints in person, accompanied by BEM USU, BEM FEB USU, and representatives of the Accounting Student Association,” said USU Public Relations and Promotion Manager, Irsan Mulyadi, via a written statement. The USU Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS) stated it has received 10 reports from the victims. Most of them experienced sexual harassment through short messages on social media. “As of Friday (10/7) afternoon, 10 people have officially reported to the University of North Sumatra’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence. Some were harassed verbally, others through chatting on social media,” said Irsan. The USU Satgas PPKS had actually sent a summons letter to CHS to request a statement. However, the alleged perpetrator failed to attend the summons without providing an explanation. The summons letter was sent directly to CHS’s home and was confirmed to have been received by his parents. When asked about the possibility of strict sanctions, such as expulsion or being dropped out (DO) for CHS, Irsan stated that the university is still investigating the case objectively. The university will only make a final decision after the alleged perpetrator provides his official statement.
