The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has reported that 761 households, or approximately 2,692 individuals, have been affected by flooding across ten sub-districts within two districts in Gorontalo City, Gorontalo Province.

“The flood-affected areas include two districts spanning a total of ten sub-districts,” stated Abdul Muhari, Head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre of the BNPB, in a statement on Monday (18/5).

The flooding was triggered by high rainfall on Saturday (16/5), causing the Serdadu River to overflow and inundate residential areas and agricultural fields.

“The flood occurred because the Serdadu River channel overflowed following heavy rain, subsequently submerging residential settlements and paddy fields in several affected areas,” he explained.

The impact spans ten sub-districts across two districts: Kota Timur, which includes the sub-distations of Heledula Utara, Moodu, Heledula Selatan, Padebuolo, and Ipilo; and Kota Utara, which includes Wongkaditi Timur, Wongkaditi Barat, Dembe Jaya, Dembe II, and Dulomo.

“Based on preliminary data, approximately 761 households or about 2,692 individuals are affected by this incident, and further data collection is ongoing. Additionally, around 603 houses have been reported as affected by the floodwaters,” he clarified.

In managing the disaster, Muhari noted that the Gorontalo City BPBD has conducted assessments and coordinated with various relevant parties to accelerate relief efforts in the affected areas.

“The BPBD team has also gone directly to the locations to assess the condition of the residents and the impact of the flooding,” he concluded.
