10 soldiers detained for fatal beating

JAKARTA: Ten members of the Jakarta Military Command's
supplies and transportation unit were detained by the military
police after strong evidence was found that they had beaten to
death a security guard, identified as Bagus Hariyanto, 50, alias
Black, on Oct. 15.

Jakarta Military spokesman Lt. Col. Apang Sopandi said that
after exhuming Bagus' body on Sunday, the forensic team of the
Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital found that his death was
caused by a series of blows to the body.

The military had initially declared that Bagus died of a drug
overdose. -- JP
