Lance Armstrong splits from wife

AUSTIN, Texas: Five-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has separated from his wife of five years Kristin and the couple are seeking a divorce, the Austin American-Stateman newspaper reported on Thursday.

Armstrong said the couple separated shortly after his fifth straight win in the world famous race at the end of July.

The 31-year-old Lance said: "We both have legal representation, and we're doing this peacefully. The craziest thing is, we're closer now and better friends than ever before. We're truly committed to maintaining a good relationship, but not a marriage."

Kristin, 32, said: "It's an unfortunate situation. We are making the best of it for the sake of our kids." --AFP

Scottsdale WTA event moved to Qatar

NEW YORK: The Qatar Tennis Federation has purchased the Scottsdale women's tournament and will move it from Arizona to Doha in 2004. It had been scheduled to be played concurrently with the men's ATP event from March 1-7.

"While we are disappointed that the women will not be playing in Scottsdale, we think the move to Qatar provides new options for women's tennis," Peter Tatum, IMG vice-president Western Region Events, said on Thursday.

"Scottsdale is a terrific tennis community, and we look forward to continuing to expand our 13-year-old men's ATP event."

Doha was scheduled to host a women's tournament from Feb. 16 - 22 but it has now been upgraded in its later slot. --Reuters
