10 Regions Affected by Tsunami After Nagekeo Earthquake, Including 3 Areas in Sulawesi

An earthquake measuring magnitude (M) 7 struck the Mbay area of Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The quake triggered a tsunami in several areas, with observed wave heights reaching 0.94 metres.

According to detikNews, BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis Wijayanto said the earthquake had the potential to generate a tsunami. Based on BMKG’s early warning, several areas were placed on alert and advisory status.

“BMKG’s tsunami early warning indicates that this earthquake has tsunami potential with threat status levels: alert (0.5–3 metres) occurring in North Manggarai, North Ngada, Ende, East Flores, and Jeneponto. Advisory (less than 0.5 metres) occurring in East Flores, Bima, Dompu, and Wajo,” said BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis Wijayanto in his statement on Saturday (15/8/2026).

The following tsunami observations were recorded:

  2. Kewapante Port, Sikka, at 05:16 WIB with a height of 0.38 metres

  3. East Flores, at 05:24 WIB with a height of 0.25 metres

  4. Labuan Bajo, at 05:26 WIB with a height of 0.36 metres

  5. Maurole, Ende, at 05:27 WIB with a height of 0.94 metres

  6. Dompu, at 05:29 WIB with a height of 0.17 metres

  7. Bakalang, Alor, at 05:41 WIB with a height of 0.14 metres

  8. Baubau, Southeast Sulawesi, at 05:47 WIB with a height of 0.30 metres

  9. Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, at 05:58 WIB with a height of 0.54 metres

  10. Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, at 06:27 WIB with a height of 0.23 metres

Tsunami Warning Ends

BMKG subsequently ended the tsunami early warning after monitoring results showed no further significant or dangerous rise in sea levels.

“Taking into account the current conditions, regarding the results of sea level observations in the affected areas, there is no longer any significant and dangerous rise in sea level, therefore the tsunami early warning is declared ended at 07:30 WIB,” he explained.

Meanwhile, as of 08:00 WIB, BMKG monitoring results showed 52 aftershock activities, with magnitudes ranging from M 3.6 to M 6.2, of which one was felt.

“The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified information. Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake. Be alert for aftershocks that may still occur,” he concluded.
