10 People's Schools to Be Established in Jakarta
Cabinet Secretariat announced that ten people’s schools will be established in Jakarta in the near future. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf discussed the plan during a meeting on Saturday, 30 May 2026.
According to the Cabinet Secretariat, the government has reviewed several schools in Jakarta set to become people’s schools, including those assessed last month, as stated in the announcement on Sunday, 31 May 2026.
The ten people’s schools in Jakarta are planned to accommodate 1,000 underprivileged students, including those not enrolled in school, dropouts, and street children.
The people’s schools programme is also targeted for implementation in other regions, with the new academic year starting in July 2026.
The Ministry of Social Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, aims to complete the construction of 93 permanent people’s school buildings for phase II by June 2026, with operations set to begin in the upcoming academic year starting July.
Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf stated that construction acceleration is being pursued to ensure permanent people’s schools commence operations swiftly. “The completion target for 93 people’s school building sites has been prioritised and supported by the Minister of Public Works to be operational for the 2026/2027 academic year by July,” Saifullah said after a coordination meeting with the Public Works Minister at the Ministry of Social Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
In addition to phase II, the government has commenced phase III construction of permanent people’s schools, divided into III A, III B, and III C based on land readiness and administrative requirements.
Saifullah also noted the government is collaborating with the Ministry of Communications and Digital to prepare digital learning infrastructure and internet connectivity at the schools. “Digital learning infrastructure, internet connections, and other related digital education elements are being prepared,” he said.
During the transition from provisional to permanent people’s schools, the Ministry of Social Affairs plans to recruit over 3,000 teachers and 5,000 education staff this year, with a target of enrolling more than 32,000 new students.
