Competition in the global asset management industry is intensifying. Yet BlackRock still stands firm as the world’s largest asset management company, with total assets under management (AUM) reaching US$15.3 trillion.

That figure puts BlackRock US$3.3 trillion ahead of Vanguard, which occupies second place. Vanguard is recorded as managing around US$12 trillion in funds.

Fidelity Management & Research follows in third place with US$7.1 trillion in assets under management. Combined, BlackRock, Vanguard and Fidelity manage US$34.4 trillion in funds.

After these three companies, there is a considerable gap. The Capital Group Cos. Inc. sits in fourth place with AUM of US$3.2 trillion, followed by Europe’s Amundi at US$2.8 trillion.

Overall, the ten companies manage assets of around US$50.77 trillion. BlackRock and Vanguard alone control more than half of the top ten’s total AUM, at roughly 53.8%.

North American dominance is also very strong. Eight companies on the list hail from that region, while Europe is represented only by Amundi and the asset management joint venture between BPCE and Generali.

The size of assets under management reflects both the scale of the business and investor confidence in an investment manager. AUM encompasses funds managed by a company on behalf of institutional and retail investors, including through mutual funds, pension funds, index products, bonds and various other investment instruments.

With funds under management reaching tens of trillions of US dollars, the investment decisions of these giants carry significant influence over movements in global financial markets.
