10 Facts: Road Collapse Leads to Prolonged Traffic Congestion in Lenteng Agung
A section of Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta (Jaksel), heading towards Depok, has collapsed. The road damage caused prolonged traffic congestion in Lenteng Agung.
“At 05:33, a road collapse occurred on Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung, specifically in front of Sate PSK in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta. Motorists travelling from Jakarta to Depok were advised to exercise caution,” stated TMC Polda Metro Jaya on its X account on Friday (29/5/2026).
The collapse occurred in the middle lane, leaving only two of three lanes passable. The key facts are as follows:
Severe Traffic Congestion
The collapse triggered severe congestion on Friday morning, with traffic building up from north to south, particularly from Pasar Minggu towards Depok.
A video uploaded by TMC Polda Metro Jaya showed a pothole caused by the collapse, with vehicles approaching the site moving slowly.
“Current traffic conditions on Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung in South Jakarta due to the road collapse are reported as busy and congested,” TMC Polda Metro Jaya stated.
South Jakarta Traffic Police implemented traffic management by closing two lanes for vehicles travelling from Jakarta to Depok.
“Only one lane is currently passable for motorists,” they added.
Collapsed Road is Wide and Deep
The collapsed section of Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung was wide and deep. Detikcom’s observation at the site on Friday at 08:30 WIB showed congestion stretching from Tapal Kuda Lenteng Agung to the collapse site, with drivers slowing down as they approached.
Police lines, barriers, traffic cones, and yellow markings were in place to keep drivers away from the hole, which was approximately 3 metres deep and 5 metres wide.
The collapsed area was part of a drainage channel. Officers marked “Hit X” with Pylox near the site, indicating it was a previously patched section.
Timeline of the Road Collapse
South Jakarta’s Sub-District Public Works Office (Sudin Bina Marga) outlined the gradual collapse that began Wednesday night. Rifki Rismal, head of Sudin Bina Marga Jakarta Selatan, said they first received reports from residents and Public Infrastructure and Facilities Handling (PPSU) officers.
“On Wednesday, 27 May, at night, the Sudin Bina Marga Jakarta Selatan team received reports from residents and a PPSU officer that the road had sunk and was relatively deep,” Rifki told detikcom on Friday (29/5).
Due to the late hour, the team scheduled a site inspection for Thursday morning. Upon arrival, Bina Marga immediately applied coldmix to secure the area and ensure road user safety.
“Thursday morning, Sudin Bina Marga Jakarta Selatan swiftly inspected the site and promptly applied coldmix,” he added.
Following the initial response, SDA personnel inspected the drainage system. Field monitoring revealed the road’s substructure had become hollow, requiring serious intervention.
“Field inspections confirmed the road’s substructure was hollow, necessitating urgent action by SDA,” he explained.
Further monitoring on Thursday afternoon showed the road had further collapsed and cracked despite prior repairs. Bina Marga immediately installed water barriers to secure the area and minimise accident risks.
Shortly after, on Thursday night, the road fully collapsed and widened, engulfing two lanes and causing congestion in the Lenteng Agung area.
Rifki stated that, following coordination, SDA would address the damaged drainage culvert suspected as the primary cause of the collapse.
“Once the culvert repairs are complete, Bina Marga will immediately proceed with road repairs,” he concluded.
Excavators Deployed for Repairs
The Water Resources Agency (SDA) deployed excavators to address the collapsed road, removing unstable sections.
The excavators then laid steel plates over the hole to prevent further collapse of the road surface.
Motorists were asked to stop for approximately 15 minutes while the excavators resumed work to clear the collapsed section.
Motorcyclist Falls into Collapsed Road Hole
A motorcyclist fell into the hole, prompting a report to the fire department (damkar) for evacuation assistance. Firefighters promptly responded to the scene to rescue the victim.
“The evacuation target was a motorbike that had fallen into the middle of the road,” said Asril Rizal, head of South Jakarta’s Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat), on Friday (29/5).
The report was received by damkar at 04:15 WIB on Friday. The collapse occurred on Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung, RT 7 RW 2, Srengseng Sawah, Jagakarsa Subdistrict, South Jakarta.
“A resident reported his motorbike had fallen into the road hole to Jagakarsa Sector Damkar. Upon receiving the report, Rescue Officers immediately headed to the scene,” he added.
Damkar assessed the terrain and planned the motorcycle evacuation, deploying equipment and commencing operations at 04:28 WIB.
“After several minutes of effort, the rescue team successfully extracted the motorbike,” he said.
Cause of the Road Collapse
What caused the road collapse in Lenteng Agung? South Jakarta’s Water Resources Agency (SDA) revealed the cause.
“The cause was a 3-metre-wide culvert that had deteriorated due to age, leading to erosion,” said Sartono, SDA Sector Head of Jagakarsa, to reporters in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Friday (29/5/2026).
