The glow of hundreds of torches illuminating the streets of Sukajadi Village, Sukakarya District, Bekasi Regency, during the Islamic New Year commemoration of 1 Muharram 1448 Hijriah served not only as a symbol of the changing year. The moment also became a stage for a call for unity and an appeal to maintain the nation’s integrity amidst the various challenges facing Indonesia.

According to Bekasi community leader Ahmad Syarifuddin, the Islamic New Year should be interpreted as an invitation to abandon attitudes of mutual slander, spreading hatred, and engaging in provocations that have the potential to divide society.

“Do not pit this nation against itself. Indonesia was built with unity, mutual cooperation, and a spirit of togetherness. The momentum of 1 Muharram must serve as a reminder that national progress can only be achieved if we maintain harmony and brotherhood,” said Ahmad Syarifuddin on Monday (15/6/2026).

He assessed that communities, especially in rural areas, currently need solutions to various life problems more than political noise that provides no direct benefit to the people. According to him, residents need employment opportunities, improved welfare, better education, and social stability that allows development to proceed sustainably.

“The people need solutions, not conflict. Village communities want to live peacefully, work comfortably, and see development progress. Therefore, let us stop narratives that only cause division and unrest within society,” he stated.

He expressed hope that differences of opinion, which are part of democratic life, do not develop into hostilities that threaten national unity. “We may have differing opinions, but do not let those differences be exploited to divide the nation’s children. Let us prioritise moral conduct, dialogue, and the spirit of brotherhood for a better Indonesia,” he said.
