WOLLONGONG, New South Wales (JP): The refugee crisis off
Christmas Island aboard the Norwegian Container ship M.V Tampa
has demonstrated that the Conservative Government of Prime
Minister John Howard does not understand how to work
cooperatively with Indonesia. By making a unilateral decision to
prevent the entry of Afghan asylum seekers into Australian
territorial waters, Howard's objective was twofold.

BANGKOK: Drug suppression, fishery development and mutual
border patrols will be discussed during the visit of Burma's No.
3 leader.

Many observers regarded the visit by Burma's Intelligence
Chief Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt to Bangkok on Monday as reflecting a
new page in their bilateral relationship, one that will see both
countries adopting a more relaxed approach and greater
willingness to compromise when dealing with current and future
joint problems.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP): The teenager mounts her motorcycle, starts
the engine and in a flash is defying gravity, balanced nearly
parallel to the ground as she speeds around inside a eight-meter-
tall she calls her "Wall of Death."

She's also defying the strict social mores that conservative
Islamic clerics are seeking to maintain despite strong electoral
support given to Iranian reformers in recent years.

SANGATTE, France: Maybe it is the end of the summer that fills
them with such sudden desperation, the thought of bitter winter
nights spent dodging security patrols, hanging from bridges,
wriggling through razor wire fences, squatting in ditches in the
rain.

Maybe it is because there are many more trains at this time of
year, so perhaps there is a better chance of jumping on one. Or
maybe the theory is that there is success in numbers: if enough
of you have a go at the same time, some are surely bound to get
through.

Koizumi budget reform must put substance above amount

TOKYO: Economic indicators continue to worsen, and stock
prices are in free fall.

Against the backdrop of such bad business news, work to draft
the budget for the next fiscal year has entered its key stage.
Government offices are hammering out their respective requests,
while also bearing in mind the deadline for so-called structural
reform special demands at the end of this month. All in all, the
compilation process is expected to continue through the end of
calendar 2001.
