Jakarta, VIVA – Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Makarim has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM).

Prosecutors deem Nadiem Makarim guilty in the corruption case regarding the procurement of Chromebook laptops and CDM.

During the trial, public prosecutor (JPU) from the Attorney General’s Office, Roy Riady, stated that the indictment against Nadiem Makarim spans 1,597 pages.

The JPU noted that the indictment was systematically compiled, starting from the introduction, trial facts, fact analysis, legal analysis, and conclusion.

“But on this occasion, we will only read the key points. First, regarding the introduction, followed by the legal analysis,” the JPU said during the indictment reading session at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court (PN Jakpus) on Wednesday.

The panel of judges and the defence team agreed to have only the key points of the indictment read, especially considering that Nadiem needed to go directly to the hospital after the indictment session to undergo surgery.

“I am healthy and ready to attend the trial, but tonight I will undergo surgery directly from here,” Nadiem stated during the proceedings when asked about his condition by Chief Judge Purwanto Abdullah.

In the alleged corruption case of the education digitalisation programme involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology from 2019 to 2022, Nadiem is charged with corruption that harms state finances amounting to Rp2.18 trillion.

The corruption is alleged to have been committed, among others, by carrying out the procurement of information and communication technology-based learning facilities in the form of Chromebook laptops and CDM for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years, not in accordance with the procurement planning and principles of procurement.

Nadiem’s actions are charged as having been carried out jointly with three other defendants in separate trials, namely Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, and Sri Wahyuningsih, as well as Jurist Tan, who is currently a fugitive.

In detail, the state losses caused amount to Rp1.56 trillion related to the education digitalisation programme at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, as well as US$44.05 million or equivalent to Rp621.39 billion due to the procurement of unnecessary and unbeneficial CDM for the education digitalisation programme.

With those actions, Nadiem is alleged to have received money amounting to Rp809.59 billion originating from PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB) through PT Gojek Indonesia.
