1,506 Inmates Receive Remission, 9 Wards Granted Sentence Reductions on Nyepi 2026 Occasion
A total of 1,506 inmates received special remission on the occasion of the Holy Day of Nyepi for the Saka New Year 1948. Additionally, nine child wards were granted Special Sentence Reduction (PMPK).
The Holy Day of Nyepi for the Saka New Year 1948 falls on Thursday (19/3/2026). Of the total 1,506 inmates who received remission, four of them will be released immediately tomorrow.
“The granting of remission and sentence reductions during religious holidays is part of fulfilling the rights of inmates, as well as an instrument of guidance within the correctional system,” said Director General of Corrections Mashudi while reading a written speech from the Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto, at the Class 1 Cipinang State Detention Centre (Rutan Cipinang), on Wednesday (18/3).
He stated that the granting of remission and sentence reductions has been carried out in accordance with applicable regulations and requirements. He emphasised that remission and sentence reductions are a form of appreciation from the correctional system to inmates and child wards who have consistently demonstrated good behaviour during the guidance process.
“Remission and sentence reductions are not merely a reduction in the period of serving the sentence, but a form of recognition for inmates who show behavioural change, discipline, and seriousness in following the guidance programme,” Mashudi explained.
“Recipients of remission and sentence reductions are those who behave well, actively participate in guidance programmes, and show positive development during their sentence,” Mashudi added.
Mashudi said that the Holy Day of Nyepi is a moment for Hindus to engage in self-introspection in silence. Therefore, he hopes that recipients of remission and sentence reductions can further strengthen their commitment to good behaviour and leave past mistakes behind.
“The momentum of Nyepi should be an opportune time for self-introspection. I hope that inmates can cultivate responsibility, not only to themselves but also to their families and society. Use this opportunity as a turning point to improve oneself and not repeat past mistakes,” he added.
