1,506 Hindu Inmates Receive Nyepi Remission, Four Granted Freedom

JAKARTA - Over a thousand Hindu inmates have received sentence reductions, or remission, on the occasion of Nyepi 2026 celebrations. The remission was symbolically granted at Cipinang Class I Detention Centre in East Jakarta. “The Nyepi remission for all of Indonesia totals 1,506, with only four being released. Alhamdulillah, that’s quite a number,” stated Brigadier General of Police Mashudi, Director General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, when interviewed at the location on Wednesday (18/3/2026). In Jakarta alone, seven individuals received sentence reductions. The remissions granted vary for each inmate. “Some get one month, 15 days, some 1.5 months, and the maximum is two months, with the absolute maximum being release,” Mashudi added. When combined with the Eid al-Fitr occasion, the number of inmates receiving remission this year is higher than last year. However, Mashudi declined to reveal the number of inmates who will receive Eid remission later. He assured that the remissions granted comply with regulations and careful considerations. One of the considerations for granting remission is good behaviour and regular participation in guidance programmes within the correctional facilities.
