1,500 Homes to Be Built for Flores Earthquake Victims in NTT
The government, together with private institutions, will build 1,500 housing units for residents affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Of that number, 1,000 units come from the central government programme and 500 units from private support through the Suci Buddha Foundation.
NTT Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena conveyed this while inspecting earthquake-affected areas in Flores on 22–23 August 2026. The inspection began in Ngada, Nagekeo, Ende, and continued to Sikka. Previously, Laka Lena also visited earthquake victims from Labuan Bajo to Maumere.
Laka Lena said that 1,000 homes for earthquake-affected residents in Flores will be built by the central government through the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP). In the initial phase, construction will be prioritised for Manggarai, East Manggarai, and Nagekeo regencies.
"On behalf of the three regents and their affected residents, as governor, I express my gratitude to the Minister of PKP for providing housing support to us," Laka Lena said in his statement on Sunday (23/8/2026).
Laka Lena said that the construction and repair of homes belonging to earthquake-affected residents is urgent. According to him, PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait also personally provided Rp 5 billion in financial assistance.
"The funds will be used to build additional homes outside the government’s 1,000-home programme," Laka Lena said.
"The assistance is directed not only at building new homes, but also at repairing residents’ homes that can still be saved," he added.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that 91 people died as a result of the powerful earthquake in NTT as of Sunday (23/8/2026). The earthquake also injured 1,286 people and 156,782 people are still displaced.
BNPB also recorded that 58,360 homes were damaged by the earthquake in several areas of NTT. That figure does not include educational facilities, places of worship, health facilities, and other public facilities that were also affected.
