1.4 Million Vehicles Leave Jabotabek, Mudik Peak Occurs on H-3
The wave of mudik for Eid al-Fitr 1447 H is beginning to reach its peak. PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk recorded 1,483,703 vehicles leaving the Jabotabek area from H-10 to H-3 of Lebaran, or from 11 to 18 March 2026. This figure surged sharply by 30.1% compared to the normal traffic volume, which typically stands at around 1.1 million vehicles. This flow represents 42.0% of the total projection of 3.5 million vehicles expected to exit Jakarta by the end of March. Jasa Marga’s data shows that traffic distribution remains concentrated towards the east. As many as 788,710 vehicles, or about 53.1% of mudik travellers, chose the Trans Java and Bandung routes. The most significant increase was observed on the Cikampek Utama toll road. The flow of vehicles heading to Trans Java reached 523,223 units, skyrocketing by 132.4% from normal conditions. For the westbound route to Merak, 402,945 vehicles were recorded (up 4.7%), while the southbound route to Puncak reached 292,048 vehicles (up 3.8%). The peak mudik flow so far broke on Wednesday (18/3/2026) or H-3 of Lebaran. As many as 270,315 vehicles were monitored leaving Jakarta in one day alone. This volume is nearly double (98.3%) the normal traffic and exceeds last year’s mudik peak by 4.62%. In response to this drastic surge, traffic engineering in the form of national one-way systems and contraflows has been activated under police discretion. Congestion at rest areas remains a classic challenge every mudik season. Currently, Jasa Marga operates 64 rest areas across its toll road network. However, to anticipate build-ups, Jasa Marga has prepared contingency strategies involving 10 SPBU locations functioning as alternative rest areas outside the toll roads. These alternative facilities are spread from the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll KM 72 to the Semarang-Solo Toll KM 444. Their locations are not far from toll gates, making them easily accessible. Jasa Marga urges mudik travellers to ensure their physical condition and vehicles are in top shape. Additionally, sufficient electronic money balance and fuel are key to a smooth journey. Road users are also asked to wisely manage rest times so that facilities on the mudik routes can be utilised alternately by fellow travellers.
