1,052 prisoners and juvenile inmates granted special remission and sentence reduction for Waisak
The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, through the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas), has granted Special Remission (RK) and Special Sentence Reduction (PMP) for Vesak Day 2570 BE 2026. A total of 1,052 Buddhist prisoners and juvenile inmates across Indonesia received remission and PMP.
According to the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, the special remission and PMP were granted on Sunday, 31 May 2026. Of the 1,052 prisoners and juveniles, 1,047 prisoners received Waisak remission, while five juvenile inmates received special PMP for 2026.
Of the total prisoners receiving Waisak remission in 2026, 1,041 were granted RK I (partial sentence reduction) and six received RK II (immediate release after remission). Meanwhile, all five juvenile inmates received PMP I.
Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto stated that remission and special PMP are rights for prisoners and juvenile inmates who meet administrative and substantive criteria under existing regulations.
The Minister expressed hope that the remission would motivate prisoners and juvenile inmates to improve themselves and prepare for healthy, productive reintegration into society.
“Waisak should serve as an opportunity for self-reflection to improve behaviour, strengthen self-control, and enhance spiritual and moral quality in life,” he said.
Director General of Corrections Mashudi explained that the special Waisak remission and PMP have a positive impact on national budget efficiency.
“The special Waisak remission and PMP for 2026 saved Rp840,525,000 in prisoner meal budgets and Rp2,145,000 for juvenile inmates,” he added.
According to the Corrections Database System as of 21 May 2026, Indonesia has a total of 270,779 detainees and prisoners, comprising 55,457 detainees and 215,322 prisoners.
Meanwhile, the total number of children and juvenile inmates nationwide is 1,663, including 323 children and 1,340 juvenile inmates as of 22 May 2026.
Through the special Waisak remission and PMP, Ditjenpas hopes prisoners and juvenile inmates will be further motivated to improve themselves, comply with regulations, and prepare for healthy, productive reintegration into society.
