0.3-Metre Tsunami Hits Labuan Bajo After M7.7 Earthquake
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that a tsunami has begun to be detected in several areas following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara.
In a post on X, BMKG stated that the latest tsunami update occurred in several regions, including Sikka, NTT; Labuan Bajo, NTT; and Dompu, South Sulawesi.
“#Update, Tsunami caused by Mag:7.7 earthquake, has been detected in SIKKA (05:03 WIB) 0.19m, LABUAN BAJO (05:26 WIB) 0.36m, DOMPU (05:29 WIB) 0.17m #BMKG,” BMKG posted on X on Saturday (15/8).
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that eight regions are on alert status and potentially affected by a tsunami on Saturday (15/8). This tsunami warning was issued after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
According to the official Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (Inatews) website, the eight regions on alert status are mostly located in NTT. The list is as follows:
Northern Manggarai, NTT (estimated arrival time 05.02 WIB)
Northern Ngada, NTT (estimated arrival time 05.02 WIB)
Northern West Manggarai, NTT (estimated arrival time 05.03 WIB)
Selayar, South Sulawesi (estimated arrival time 05.04 WIB)
Northern Ende, NTT (estimated arrival time 05.05 WIB)
Northern Sikka, NTT (estimated arrival time 05.13 WIB)
Jeneponto, South Sulawesi (estimated arrival time 05.15 WIB)
Bantaeng, South Sulawesi (estimated arrival time 05.46 WIB)
“Provincial/regency/city governments on ‘Alert’ status are expected to pay attention and immediately direct residents to evacuate,” BMKG wrote on the Inatews website.
Previously, BMKG issued an early tsunami warning for East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and South Sulawesi. Earlier, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook Mbay Nagekeo, NTT on Saturday morning (15/8).
