BPOM's Illegal Cosmetics Crackdown Seizes $1.9M in Goods

Indonesia's drug regulator BPOM seized Rp 31.7 billion worth of illegal cosmetics in coordinated raids from 10–18 February, confiscating 205,133 pieces of 4,334 product variants from 91 brands, with nearly a fifth found to contain hazardous substances including mercury. The seizure value is more than 11 times higher than 2023, marking an escalation in regulatory enforcement despite BPOM operating under reduced government budget constraints (trimmed from Rp 2.6 trillion to Rp 1.4 trillion).
