President: oil, gas sector still promising

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said in Jakarta Monday the oil and gas sector in Indonesia is still very prospective even against the background of a global crisis. "The sector contributes 21 pct of Indonesia`s exports, and 32 pct of the government`s total revenue," the president said when opening the 33rd IPA (Indonesian Petroleum Association) convention and exhibition at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

Inco: construction of nickel plant in Pomalaa not feasible

Makassar (ANTARA News) - PT International Nickel Indonesia (PT Inco) Tbk said the construction of a nickel processing plant in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi had been declared economically unfeasible. Volkswagen to Open Indonesia Plant

Volkswagen AG plans to open a new assembly plant in Indonesia with an initial investment of 35 million euros, or about $47 million, a sign that the Southeast Asian nation's still-robust consumer spending is keeping it attractive to foreign companies. The planned facility, an hour east of Jakarta, the capital, will begin assembling the Touran, a compact multipurpose vehicle, and could eventually employ between 2,000 and 4,000 people, said a person with knowledge of the discussions.

Two More Palm Oil Firms Get Green OK

Another two local oil palm plantation companies - PT London Sumatra Plantation and PT Hindoli - have secured environmental certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. This means three of the 10 major palm oil producers in the country have now received the RSPO stamp of approval. Nine of the firms hold concessions extending to more than 2.9 million hectares around the country.

Maluku Tipped for $4.6b Ore Investment

Weda Bay Minerals, a consortium of Japanese and French companies, and state nickel and gold miner PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) are expected to invest $4.6 billion to develop a nickel mine in Weda Bay in Halmahera Island, North Maluku. Alwin Syah Lubis, Antam’s president director, said Paris-based Eramet, the operator of the world’s biggest ferronickel plant, and Mitsubishi were joining the project. Construction is expected to begin early next year.
