Indonesia cuts taxes to attract business

Indonesia’s parliament has passed a long-awaited law cutting corporate and personal income tax rates to broaden the country’s relatively tiny tax base and stimulate economic growth. Analysts hailed the legislation as a major milestone in Indonesia’s transition to a more business-friendly market. But they cautioned that further reforms are needed, particularly in labour regulations and the legal sector, to improve the investment climate.

Two foreign airlines to serve Bali

Ni Komang Erviani, Contributor, Badung Two more foreign airlines have been scheduled to provide direct flights to Bali in the near future said Heru Legowo, general manager for airport operations at Ngurah Rai international Airport on Wednesday. "The two airlines are Hong Kong Express based in Hong Kong and Virgin Blue in Australia," Heru said, speaking for the state-owned firm PT Angkasa Pura I, which manages the airport.

Minister denies Indonesia highly dependent on food imports

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono denied certain quarters` allegation that Indonesia was highly dependent on imports to meet its food needs, saying that these needs were mow mostly being fulfilled with domestic products. "Indonesia is now able to produce most of its food needs such as rice, sugar, maize, potato, chicken and chicken eggs. Indonesia is now even able to export some of the products," the minister said.

Melawai market traders protest against Carrefour presence

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A group of small retail traders from Pasar Melawai in the Blok M area in south Jakarta demonstrated at the Jakarta City Legislative Council (DPRD DKI) building on Wednesday to protest against the presence of a Carrefour hypermarket in the same building where they are operating. Accompanied by activists of a number of small traders` advocacy organizations, representatives of the traders` group said the Carrefour hypermarket was a threat to their businesses.

Bakrieland, Suntech cooperate in solar energy systems

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Publicly-listed real estate developer PT Bakrieland Development Tbk has agreed to cooperate with Suntech Power in creating environment-friendly buildings using solar energy systems in all the former`s projects. "Under the cooperation, Bakrieland projects will use solar energy systems and solar electrical panels to create green buildings and green environment," PT Bakrieland Development Tbk President Director and CEO Hirmansyah S. Thaib said on Wednesday.
