Indonesia to be world's largest producer of rubber

Indonesia is expected to become the world's largest producer of natural rubber in 2020 with production forecast to reach 4 million tons, Asia Pulse reported. "World natural rubber production is expected to reach 13 million tons in 2020 and Indonesia is predicted to become the world's largest producer with an output of 4 million tons," Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said. Currently the world's largest producer is Thailand with Indonesia the second followed by Malaysia in third place.

Govt. to hold Wimax tender

The government has said it will hold a tender to select the operators of broadband wireless access (BWA) of Wimax early October, Asia Pulse reported. The operators will have frequency allocation at 3.GHz3 and 2.3 GHz, said Suhono, the chairman of the BWA Committee at the office of the state minister for communications and information. Suhono said the draft regulation on the operation of BWA is expected to be available next month that tender could be held early the next month.

KPPU turns up the heat on Carrefour amid unfair business allegations

Retail companies, including French retail giant Carrefour, will be required to provide reports on merger and takeover plans to avoid unfair business practices and to help protect small suppliers in the sector. Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) member Muhammad Iqbal said Tuesday the commission would issue major retailers next month with a guideline for the "pre-notification" of mergers and acquisitions.

Crude palm oil prices: Reading into the roller-coaster ride

From a mid-June 2006 price of around US$400 per ton, it shot up 350 percent to $1,400 per ton in Rotterdam before plunging 37 percent to the current level. The million dollar question is: Where are CPO prices headed. In the U.S., Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke signaled last week that the central bank expects the commodity rally to ease.

Govt to halt refunds for oil contractors

Alfian, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta The government may delay paying refunds owed to oil and gas contractors for exploration work and investment costs next year to help sustain the state budget, a minister says. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro on Thursday urged oil and gas companies to sincerely accept the plan in recognition of the country's struggle to cope with higher global oil prices.
