Japan, China power Indonesian growth
JAKARTA - Foreign investment is suddenly picking up in Indonesia, an indication that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's pro-business policies are finally starting to pay economic dividends in spite of the recent nationalistic and anti-foreign economic regulations passed by Parliament. New business ties with both Japan and China promise to push Indonesia on to a higher economic-growth trajectory in the years ahead.

The government is pinning its hopes on the development of 14 new oil fields so as to meet next year's oil production target of 1.034 million barrels per day, slightly higher than this year's estimate of 1 million bpd, an official says.

Altimo insists on Indonesia investment
Altimo, a subsidiary of Russia's Alfa Group, will not back down on its investment plans for Indonesia despite allegations of a commercially motivated smear campaign levied by a number of civil society groups, a company official said. "We will never give up on our plan, including the possibility of buying a mobile telecoms operator here," Altimo local chief representative Soeharto told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

More support planned for micro, small businesses
In addition to a Rp 1.4 trillion (around US$149 million) allocation to subsidize the interest on loans taken out by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the government also plans to streamline the requirements for borrowing from state SME financing institutions.
