TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia has broken the record of the Guinness Book of World Record as the fastest destroyer of forests in the world and therefore will be listed in the 2008 Guinness Book. According to Hapsoro, the Southeast Asian Green Peace's forest campaigner, as many as 72 percent of Indonesia's genuine forests have vanished and half of the remaining forests are still in danger.

Mobile-8's Q1 net profit rings up 14% increase

Mobile phone operator PT Mobile-8 has announced an increase of 14 percent in its unaudited net profit to Rp 16.9 billion (US$1.8 million) in the first quarter on the back of an increased subscriber base. The number of Mobile-8 subscribers surged by 101.1 percent to 2.02 million in the January-March period from 1 million in the same period last year, a media statement from the company said Wednesday.

BI to keep Rupiah stable at around Rp9,000 against US Dollar

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah said here on Wednesday the bank would strive to make the exchange rate of the country`s currency stable at around Rp9,000 against the US dollar in support of the real sector. "We will try to make it stable meaning we will maintain its volatility. In case a fluctuation happens it will remain within a measured range. It is possible for the rupiah to reach close to Rp9,000," he said.

RI to create 1.5 million hectares of oil palm plantations until 2010

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia plans to develop 1.5 hectares of oil palm plantations until 2010 to increase production to 18 million tons over the next three years, an industry spokesperson said. The chief of the Indonesian Palm Oil Commission (KMSI), Rosediana Suharto, said here on Wednesday starting this year expansion would begin in stages reaching 1.5 million hectares until 2010 consisting of 1.375 million hectares of new plantations and 125,000 hectares of replanted plantations.

Observers question economic team`s success claims
