Yoyga governor hits 91, or 88?

YOGYAKARTA: Governor Paku Alam VIII celebrated his 91st birthday according to the Javanese calender yesterday.

He was born here on Sunday Pon 29 Mulud 1840 of the Javanese calender, which this year fell on July 24.

His Javanese birth date is said to have fallen on April 10, 1910, of the Gregorian calender. Antara calculated this would make Paku Alam 88 based on the Gregorian calender.

Paku Alam, who's full name is Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Aryo Paku Alam VIII, is currently Indonesia's eldest and longest serving governor.

He took over the post from the late Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, who died in 1988.

Despite his senior age, Paku Alam is renowned for the punctuality and energy which he brings to his work and he always arrives at his office early in the morning.

He was a strong supporter of the reform movement in the province along with Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, and helped to rally support for students during demonstrations in May.
