Youth imprisoned for motorbike theft

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: A district court here sentenced a young man to two-and-a-half years for stealing a motorbike.

Medi Setiawan, 20, who is unemployed, was convicted of having stolen the motorbike belonging to Ganti in August 1999.

The sentence, handed down by Judge Simaradja Marpaung, was six months less than the jail term demanded by prosecutor Yulita Sundari.

With his accomplice, Novi, who is still at large, Medi stole the Honda motorbike, valued at Rp 8.6 million, on the evening of Aug. 27, 1999 when it was parked at the house of its owner. --Antara

Singkil court to try Rp 4 bn graft case

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Prosecutor's Office will soon bring a Rp 4 billion corruption case before the Singkil district court.

Assistant Prosecutor for Criminal Cases, Rustam, told reporters here on Monday that the case implicated three persons including a deputy chairman of the regional legislature, only identified by his initials, AT, a foreign currency trader, ES, and an employee of the Singkil regional finance office, DSB.

Each of the three men is facing a maximum of 20 years in jail, Rustam said, adding that the Rp 4 billion had been used as capital in the foreign currency trading between May and June of last year.

The Prosecutor's Office has impounded five luxury cars and a number of documents as evidence. --Antara

Three detained for possessing weapons

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Police here seized four homemade firearms from three people in Bolo and Rasanae districts.

The seizure added to the total of 62 arrows, 15 machetes, 31 spears and 11 slingshots surrendered by their owners to the police in recent weeks.

The search for weapons was carried out as the region has been plagued by communal clashes in recent weeks, especially in Bima, police said.

The three suspects would be brought to court soon, the police said. --Antara
