Young golfer wins Tugu Pratama title

JAKARTA (JP): Young golfer Indra Hermawan's win in the Tugu Pratama Junior title yesterday has boosted his morale for his next challenge, the World Junior Championships in San Diego, U.S.A.

Indra, a five handicapper from the Pondok Cabe Course, won the Bob Hasan Challenge Trophy yesterday after scoring a fine 6-under par-282 (69 66 76 72) at the National Matoa golf club and came out as the best gross overall winner in the Class A division for golfers between 15 years old and 17 years old.

Indra and four compatriots Alga Topan, Hendri, Iin Setiawan and Eric Yunus leave for the U.S. and the world championships today.

They have been regular participants in the event and have been among the best 20 in each of the past three years.

Indra, who played consistently from the tee-off Tuesday, shattered the hopes of defending champion Iin, a six handicapper, of extending his winning streak and he had to settle for second place with a 296 (76 74 74 72).

"I think my five birdie putts on the 1st, 10th, 11th, 17th and the final hole helped me much in efforts to score better today after a poor showing on Thursday," Indra said.

Indra finished with 76 Thursday, two strokes behind Iin.

The win at the par-72 Matoa, one of President Soeharto's favorite courses, was Indra's second win in two weeks.

Early this month Indra won the Bumi Serpong Damai Junior Championships at the Damai Indah Golf and Country Club.(rsl)
