Yogyakarta hosts learning conference

YOGYAKARTA: Some 160 members of the Asian South Pacific
Bureau of Adult Education (ASPBAE), representing 30 countries
in the region, are attending a weeklong conference of learning
in Yogyakarta, which started on Monday.

The conference, under the central theme of the Learning is
Freedom, is aimed at promoting better adult learning and
education and a higher rate of literacy in the region.

Speaking at her welcome address, ASPBAE's Secretary-General
Maria Lourdes A. Khan of India said that adult education and
learning remained misunderstood, distorted, misinterpreted and
poorly financed by both the government and aid agencies. -- JP
