Wright gets it wrong as Arsenal go through

PARIS (AFP): A glancing header by last-minute Arsenal call-up Kevin Campbell ended Paris St Germain's dreams of a place in the European Cup Winners Cup final Tuesday night.

And while the English side was reaching its first final since its unsuccessful 1980 Cup Winners Cup campaign ended in defeat against Valencia, tiny Austrian club Casino Salzburg was earning a place in the UEFA Cup final against Italian giant Inter Milan.

The Gunners wrapped up their tie against Paris St. Germain 2-1 on aggregate, with Campbell's sixth minute goal the only score in the return clash.

But the English club's jubilation was tarnished by a booking to star striker Ian Wright.

Wright was in tears after being shown the yellow card three minutes before the interval for a lunging tackle on Alain Roche. The warning means that he will miss the May 4th final in Copenhagen against either Lisbon's Benfica or Italian titleholder Parma.

PSG started and finished the game the stronger but never found the final pass that would seriously embarrass the North London team.

Campbell's goal came out of the blue. He found space in PSG's penalty area and nodded Lee Dixon's clever ball from the right beyond the reach of goalkeeper Bernard Lama.

But far from settling its nerves, Arsenal still looked shaky even when it was ahead.

It was torn to shreds at times by some sophisticated French football and when Rai put Ginola through, the classy winger's fierce drive drew a breathtaking save from David Seaman. PSG came out for the second half fired up.

Fournier burst through on the right and it needed a cool interception by Adams to clear the danger.

Arsenal hit back and played with more composure until the last 20 minutes, when the PSG pressure became incessant.

With 19 minutes left to play Ginola missed the perfect chance to equalize. The ball bounced off Selley inside the box leaving him with only Seaman to beat but he put his volley wide of the near post.

Arsenal stood firm, but with just three minutes left they suffered another setback when Winterburn was carried off on a stretcher.

Arsenal boss George Graham later paid tribute to his players by praising PSG.

"They are a very good team," Graham admitted, adding a word for Wright when he said: "I feel so sorry for him. He has made such a great impact in his three years here and has become an idol with the fans. But now he's going to miss a big European final and you cannot do other than sympathize with him."

UEFA Cup

Salzburg, which has never even won an Austrian Cup or league title, set the stage for its 'David-and-Goliath' UEFA showdown with Inter Milan by drawing 1-1 with Karlsruhe in Germany. Its away-goal put it through after a scoreless draw in the first leg in Austria.

Midfielder Hermann Stadler was the Austrian hero, catching the Karlsruhe defense napping to fire them ahead after only 12 minutes.

Karlsruhe striker Rainer Krieg equalized nine minutes into the second-half but the Germans were unable to convert their late pressure into the crucial goal.

It was another muscular display by the Austrians, who had two players suspended for the match. They picked up another five yellow cards with Aigner, Jurcevic, Feirersinger, Huetter and Muzek all going into the referee's book. But none of the offenders had been sanctioned in the first-leg and consequently all will be able to play in the final.

Inter

Inter Milan, the 1991 winner of the trophy, overturned a 3-2 deficit from the first-leg with an impressive 3-0 defeat of its Italian league rival Cagliari.

Dutch duo Dennis Bergkamp, who opened the scoring with a 37th minute penalty, and Wim Jonk, who scored the third goal in the 63rd minute, were the architects of Cagliari's downfall.

Bergkamp's goal would have been enough to put Inter through but they could not breathe easily until Nicola Berti scored nine minutes after the break. Results
