World-class painting exhibition due here

Jakarta will soon host a spectacular painting exhibition, displaying more than 500 masterpieces by renowned local and international artists.

The exhibition called "The Jakarta International Fine Arts" will include the original works by Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, Francisco de Goya and Renoir.

Local paintings include works by Raden Saleh, Basuki Abdullah, Affandi, Mochtar Apin and Lee Man-Fong.

Organized jointly by the newly established Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia and the London-based Bradbury International Services Pte. Ltd, the exhibition will take place at the Sangri-la Hotel from Oct. 18 through 23.

Susrinah Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo, the organizing committee's chairperson, told reporters yesterday that 12 well-known art galleries from the United States, Europe and Asia will also take part at the exhibition where they will be displaying their outstanding art collections.

The organizing committee will also organize a fine art contest in which artists will compete for the Philip Morris Award. Indonesian artists are invited to join the competition, she said.

She explained that the Foundation, Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia, was established on June 8 of this year. The foundation is aimed at encouraging cultural activities, and fine arts in particular, across the country. (raw)
