World-class filmmakers to lecture at JiFFest

Faced with a short supply of quality screenplays in the domestic film industry, the Jakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest) is planning to organize workshops in script writing.

Participants for the workshop, slated for Dec. 10 and Dec. 18 will benefit from lectures given by top-notch scriptwriters like David Howard and Graeme Isaacs.

Howard, writer of The Tools to Screenwriting, is an Emmy winner and has been lauded for his sci-fi hit Galaxy Quest, while Isaacs was nominated for best world cinema documentary at the Sundance film festival for his film Dhakiyarr vs the King.

Other luminaries due to lecture are Australian award-winning producer Curtis Levy and winner at the 2005 Sundance film festival Leonard Retel Helmrich.

The workshop will have programs to develop scriptwriting skills for short fiction, short documentary, feature and long documentary films.

Workshop participants will be selected from professionals in the film industry and those who aspire to take the plunge.

In each category, JiFFest will select 10 professional writers and 20 observers.

Those who are not selected to be participants may register as observers, an arrangement that enables them to sit in and watch.

A script development competition is to be held in tandem with the workshop; contest winners will get a cash prize that they could use to develop their films.

The deadline for entries was Oct. 15.
