World-class European musicians to perform in Indonesia for free

JAKARTA (JP): It is superb and authentic, and it is brought to
you live by top musicians from six European countries. And best
of all, it is free.

World renowned music ensembles from Germany, the Netherlands,
Belgium, Austria, France and Finland are in Indonesia for a
series of free concerts which will last until April 2.

The European Union Music Festival is presenting Music of the
20th Century. The festival kicked off on Thursday in Bandung and
will be staged in a number of cities, including Jakarta,
Yogyakarta and Surabaya.

"We would like to share a little happiness with people who are
suffering by offering good music performances which are free of
charge," said Rudolf Barth, director of the Goethe Institute,
which is helping to organize the festival.

Those taking part in the event are the Petersen Quartet from
Germany, Logos from Belgium, the Quatuor Ysae from France, the
Netherlands' Amstel Trio, the Kammertrio-Linz-Wien from Austria
and Finland's Trio Finlandia.

The Amstel Trio from the Netherlands will play seven music
compositions, including:

Loon Orthel's (l905-l987) Sonata 2 op.41 (l958) for cello and
piano. Maurice Revel's (1875-l937) Don Quichotte a Dulcinee
(l932) for vocal and piano. Three songs based on the texts of
Paul Morad; Chanson Romaneque, Chanson Epique, and Chanson a
Boire.

Henri Delnooz' (l942) children's song Svendbroger Gedichte
(l975) for vocal and cello based on Bertold Brecht's text
entitled Der Schneider von Ulm, Vom Kind, das sich nicht waschen
wolte, Der Pflaumenbaum.

The Quatuor Ysae ensemble will feature Joseph Haydn's Quatuor
en si bemol majeur op.76 no.4, Henri Dutillex's Ainsi la nuit
(l976) and Maurice Ravel's Quartuor en fa majeur 28.

The Petersen Quartett will play Franz Schubert's Der Tod und
das Madchen, (The Death and the Maiden). The group will also
perform Siegfried Matthus's Das Madchen und der Tod (l996),
written by the composer especially for the Petersen Quartet.

Kammertrio Linz-Wien will perform several compositions,
including Scandinavian folk music by Erwin Schaller for recorder,
violin and guitar; and Fridolin Dallinger's sonatina for guitar.

During their performances in Indonesia, Trio Finlandia will
feature Finnish composer Jean Sibelius' (l865-l957) pieces for
piano, violin and violoncello. They will also perform Einar
Englund's (l916- ) Trio for Violine, Vioncello and Piano (l982),
andante, allegretto, adagio and allegro energico.

The Belgian contemporary music group Logos will present one of
its famous works, a shamanistic piece titled Song Book, which was
composed by Godfried Willem Raes.
