Workshop on
mentally disabled

BOGOR, West Java: The Ministry of Education and Culture is
seeking ways to educate slightly intellectually-disabled children
following treatment which has been given to those who are blind
and deaf.

While opening a workshop on teaching students with slight
intellectual disabilities here yesterday, minister Wardiman
Djojonegoro said the group deserves special attention because the
1989 education law stipulates that every citizen, including those
with physical and/or mental disabilities, has an equal right to
obtain education.

The minister then noted that in the process of improving the
educational system, his ministry has been able to establish some
37,000 centers of special treatment for disabled students.

"Lately we have made significant progress on education for
disabled students. To give you an example, you might have noticed
that the news on television is now accessible for the deaf,"
Wardiman said. (11)
