Workers urge salary hike

SEMARANG: At least 500 workers of timber company PT Tri Cahya Purnama rallied on Wednesday in front of the provincial legislative building, demanding a salary hike and welfare improvements.

Protesters' coordinator Sukirno urged the councillors to help them fight for their demands.

The workers demanded a daily pay hike of Rp 1,000 for each worker with two years of experience, Rp 1,500 for those with three years of experience, and Rp 2,000 with four years of experience.

They also urged the management to pay male and female workers equal remuneration, provide them with Rp 2,000 in daily transportation fees, and enroll them on an insurance scheme.

A strike also took place in the compound of PT Jati Luhur Agung, where some 3,000 workers of the company demanded a 12-day holiday to celebrate Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year. (har/lup)
