Workers protest at the wrong address

JAKARTA (JP): About 50 activists of the Workers Committee for Reform staged a protest outside the Attorney General's Office on Thursday, but it turned out they were at the wrong address because their protest had nothing to do with the office.

The activists, who started their protest at about 11 a.m., demanded that the government raise the workers' minimum regional wages by 100 percent and help lower prices, stop dismissals, guarantee the freedom to organize and annul the Armed Forces' dual function.

According to employees of the office, such demands should be directed to the Ministry of Manpower.

The demonstration, which lasted about one hour, was led by Lukman, a dismissed worker from Semarang, Central Java.

The protesters also demanded that Dita Sari be released. Dita is being detained in Surabaya on subversion cases.

Despite the error of where to address their grievances, 10 of the workers' representatives were received by Muzammi, head of the assessment center for intelligence operations, Antara reported. (hhr)
