Workers paid Rp 30 for overtime

PADANG, West Sumatra: Employees of province-owned Bank Nagari receive a mere Rp 30 (U.S. 0.4 cents) an hour for overtime, a local councillor said.

A member of the provincial legislature's finance commission, Salahuddin Datuk Tumangguang, said the poor treatment had recently been reported to the commission by several current and former employees of the bank, whose shares are owned by the provincial administration.

Salahuddin said "the inhuman policy" had been in effect for the last five years, but the employees were too afraid to complain to management.

Minimum overtime payment in the province has been set at Rp 2,500 per hour.

Salahuddin said the commission plans to summon the bank's management to a hearing to clarify the report. -- Antara

SURABAYA: Junior high school graduates in Surabaya will be able to register for their favorite high schools on the Internet, thanks to support from state telecommunications firm PT Telkom for the East Java division.

Deputy division head Mumu Natapriatna said here on Wednesday that graduates only have to click on www.pendidikansby.org or www.sekolah-online.net to search for their preferred schools and enroll themselves for the next academic year.

The names of accepted students will be announced on the websites, where students and parents can monitor the update of the selection process by the hour.

After registration, the students need only to submit the required documents to one of 35 designated selection posts across the city.

Legislature rejects car buying plan

MALANG, East Java: Councillors in Malang regency have rejected a plan to buy new cars for 33 district chiefs.

A councillor from the Golkar faction, Rendra Kresna, said on Wednesday that Regent Sujud Pribadi had proposed allocating Rp 4.9 billion (US$597,500) from the revision of the 2003 regional budget to purchase cars to help the subdistrict chiefs make the 2004 election a success.

Each subdistrict chief drives a 1996 Isuzu Panther minivan.

Rendra said the legislature recommended that the regents focus on more urgent programs, including reconstructing the roads and bridges that connect the subdistricts across the regency.

"The proposal is unrealistic because the current cars are still in good condition. There are many other programs we need to focus on," he said.

Another councillor, Bibit Soeprapto of the National Awakening Party, said the regent should place a priority on the education sector, including renovating elementary schools. -- Antara
