Workers continue to protest minister

PEKANBARU, Riau: For the fifth straight day, workers here occupied the local council building to protest the appointment of Bomer Pasaribu as minister of manpower.

The workers told Antara they would continue their protest and intended to send the new minister a coffin as a symbol of their disapproval.

Armed security officers remained on alert around the building to prevent any vandalism, but so far the protest has remained peaceful.

Despite setting up camp in the council building, protesters have allowed councilors to perform their work with little interference.

The protesters said they would remain at the council building until Bomer was dismissed.

"We will not leave while Bomer still has his position as manpower minister," protest spokesman Kaster said. (02)
