Wonogiri villages hit by landslide

SEMARANG: Heavy rain late Friday night in the Wonogiri area caused landslides at two separate villages in the regency, injuring four residents and destroying two houses.

The first landslide at half past midnight on early Saturday morning sent mud and large stones plunging into Jatirejo village in Giritontro district. One house was destroyed and a couple were injured.

About two hours later a landslide hit Sidorejo village. Again, one house was damaged and the couple sleeping in the house injured.

"The victims have already been admitted to a local hospital and the administration will pay for the expenses," said Wonogiri Regent Tjuk Susilo, who visited the villages on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a heavy overnight downpour also inundated main thoroughfares in Semarang on Saturday.

The areas worst hit by flooding were Jl. M.T. Haryono, Jl. Citarum, Jl. Krobogan and Jl. Pahlawan.

Hundreds of houses as well as school buildings and mosques were flooded with water which reached depths of 1.5 meters. (har/edt)
