Woman stabbed in rape attempt

JAKARTA: Eka Sulistyowati, 22, a fish vendor at Ciputat Market, Tangerang regency, was severely wounded after another vendor Dedi stabbed her several times in a rape attempt at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday as the market was opening.

Eka was sent to Fatmawati Hospital due to gash wounds in her stomach, right thigh, left leg and right arm.

Police reports said Eka had just arrived at the market to open her kiosk. Since the market was busy during the early morning hours, Eka did not suspect any trouble.

However, after coming way out of a restroom, Eka was met by a friend named Parmanto, who introduced her to Dedi. Parmanto later left the two alone.

Eka felt uncomfortable because he looked drunk and was carrying a knife. He claimed the knife was used to cut fish.

Dedi later cornered Eka and tried to rape her. She screamed and Dedi began stabbing her.

Ciputat Police officers are still searching for Dedi, who fled the scene. -- JP
