Woman shot while sleeping in unexplained incident

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

A sleeping mother was shot on her left thigh in the bedroom of her house on Jl. Saidin, Pamulang, Tangerang, at around midnight on Friday. The woman, identified as Ratna, 36, suffered a gunshot wound. Her one-year-old son, who slept next to her, was unharmed.

Ratna claimed that she did not hear any shooting sound.

"I just heard a knocking sound in my sleep. When I woke up I felt my thigh hurt. I found out later that it was bleeding," she said in the afternoon.

She was taken to the Bhinneka Bhakti Husada Hospital in Pamulang where doctors removed a bullet from her thigh.

Ratna's husband Hasan, 43, and the neighbors said that they did not hear any suspicious sounds either.

South Jakarta Police investigators found a bullet hole in the bedroom ceiling located exactly above Ratna's bed.

"We have questioned a police officer from the West Jakarta precinct and one from Senen subprecinct," said South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Ghufron.

Both police officers live near Ratna's house and were the only people to possess firearms in the neighborhood.

"We have checked that there was no police operation around the neighborhood at the time the incident occurred," Ghufron said.

The police have taken the projectile removed from Ratna's thigh to the National Police Headquarters forensic lab for further investigation.

"Forensics tests will determine the type of the firearm whose bullet hit the victim," Ghufron said.
