Woman killed with son on lap

JAKARTA (JP): A three-year-old boy was found crying on the bloody lap of his murdered mother on Tuesday in Bekasi, east of Jakarta, police said.

Suprihayati, 26, had been stabbed by an identified person in her home in Duren Jaya subdistrict, East Bekasi

The boy, Yogi, was covered in her mother's blood and crying out for her, a neighbor who found them said. Suprihayati had deep gashes to her lips, neck and chest.

The neighbor, Abdul Hakim, said he heard screaming from Suprihayati's house at around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday. He said he saw a man leave the house. He then entered and found the dead mother and her son outside her bedroom.

Suprihayati together with her child arrived from her village in Pekalongan, Central Java, three months ago to join her husband, Kurdi, 27. Her eldest child, 10-year-old Devi, stays in the village with her grandmother.

Kurdi was selling vegetables at a local market when he was notified of his wife's death. The body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's morgue.

The police have yet to find a motive. Savings of Rp 1 million were initially missing from the house but were later found.

Kurdi said the body would be taken to Pekalongan to be buried. (07)
