Witnesses grilled about KPU hackers

JAKARTA: Jakarta Police have started to summon and question witnesses in their search for clues to the identity of the General Elections Commission (KPU) website hackers.

"We have questioned three witnesses, who worked in the KPU information technology (IT) department," city police cyber crimes division chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Petrus Reinhard Golose disclosed on Monday at Jakarta Police Headquarters.

He added the police would summon more witnesses this week.

Petrus said the KPU had a very secure data center, so he discounted fears that hackers might eventually break into the database to disrupt the vote-counting process.

Hackers attacked the KPU website and managed to change the names of political parties into joke names.

Earlier on Sunday, head of KPU's IT department Akhiar Oemry said that he had a clue to the hackers' identity.

However, Sr. Comr. Edmon Ilyas, director of the special crimes division under which the cyber crime division works, said it was not easy to hunt for the perpetrators of cyber crime. -- JP
