With might on its side, U.S. invades Iraq
Can somebody tell me/What we're fighting for?/Too many young men died/Too many young mothers cried/So I ask the question/Was God on our side?
These lines from Bob Dylan's With God on Our Side must have popped up in many minds following the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq on Thursday.
Americans who, according to Dylan, believe the country has God on its side through many wars, have thrown their support behind President George W. Bush's occupation of Iraq, according to a latest poll.
With might on their side, the U.S. and its allies stormed into Iraq, removing Iraqi national flags and replacing them with the Stars and Stripes as they went, betraying the real intention claimed by the U.S. that it was only removing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power.
The Iraqis have only given sporadic, meaningless resistance in the lopsided war: A hi-tech war machine taking on an army which U.S. Maj. Gen. (ret) Thomas Rhame said "... did not perform worth a crap."
As the 21st-century conquistador savored its initial triumph, Iraq was burning, the world was seething and nations were asking: Who's next?
