Wild elephants lead to sleepless nights

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: About 8,000 families of western Lampung said they were fed up with rampaging elephants after the wild beasts trampled to death two people recently.

Over the past month, many residents of western Lampung have been sleepless at night for fear of rampaging wild elephants, according to Antara.

The protected big animals are no longer afraid of the traditional torches, kerosene lamps and bamboo drums that local farmers beat to repulse them.

The village most prone to elephant attacks is Perwakilan Suwoh near the southern Bukit Barisan National Park.

On May 4, a heard of elephants trampled to death a 38-year-old farmer in the area. Earlier on Feb. 26, residents found the decomposed body of another 40-year-old villager. (pan)
