Wie Wie aims to win drag race

JAKARTA (JP): Local driver Wie Wie Rianto is looking to win the second stage of the national drag race at the Sentul circuit near Bogor on April 9.

Wie Wie said on Thursday he was ready to defend his victory in the first stage at Sentul circuit on March 19.

"I am ready to win the second stage of the drag race and try to improve on my time of 9.575 seconds in the first stage. I will use the same car (Ford Capri) and it is in top form," Wie Wie said.

In the first stage, Wie Wie's 9.575 seconds broke his record of 10.583 seconds, which he set last year.

Herry Agung (Nissan Fair Lady) finished in second place in the first stage with a time of 9.904 seconds and Budi Tohir (Corvette Singray) was third in a time of 10.583 seconds.

Wie Wie's main rival, Robert Paul, a Canadian consultant, only managed to clock a time of 10.964 seconds.

The second stage of the drag race also will feature Pro Stock (sedans), jeeps, VWs and minivans.

The race is sponsored by cigarette company Gudang Garam. Those interested in competing in the event may register at the Sentul race track or Rally Tama, phone number 722-0518. A total cash prize of Rp 21 million is at stake. (lnt)
