Why was Perspektif banned?

On Sept. 24, 1995, I met and talked with Perspektif's host Mr.
Wimar Witoelar in the Obor Foundation's stand at the book
exhibition held in Istora Senayan, Jakarta.

It is such a pity that I did not have the opportunity to
assure him of my support and sincere sympathy about his program
at SCTV, although I seldom watched it because was aired during
evening prays.

I often feel very sad these days since there is so much
violence around. Some of our brothers in Timika, Irian Jaya, were
killed and we do not know who the killers are.

Then came the banning of Perspektif, which was to feature Gus
Dur (Abdurrahman Wahid) and judge Benyamin Mangkudilaga. The talk
show was conducted in an honest and relaxed manner without any
intention of hurting anybody. Why was it axed?

I was very impressed with the interviews given by Wimar to
international radio stations. When I listened to his cheerful
addresses about the fate of our children, reflecting great
optimism, my sadness would disappear.

It seems that the road to democracy, justice and a state based
on law and aristocracy of the mind is still a long and winding
road, albeit one that is not without hope.
