Where to find a needy orphanage

JAKARTA (JP): Following a series of articles published recently in this paper about financially troubled and overcrowded orphanages in the capital, The Jakarta Post received a stream of calls from people willing to share some of their wealth to help the city's orphaned toddlers and teenagers.

The following list of names, addresses and telephone numbers of some of the 54 ailing orphanages issued by the city's Social Service Agency may meet the demand of our kind-hearted readers.

There are, of course, dozens of other orphanages outside Jakarta that face similar obstacles and urgently need help during this time of economic turmoil, which has led to the mammoth hike in the price of infant milk and food, among other things.

Sincere efforts will obviously improve the health and growth rate of the some 6,000 orphaned children.

Operators and volunteers at the orphanages would then be freer to concentrate more on the orphans rather than dwelling on the scarcity of meals.
