What leadership really means

In all parts of the world, including Indonesia, competition for power is commonplace. Political leaders in Indonesia are now maneuvering to arrange coalitions for the upcoming presidential election.

More interesting is the fact that none of the leaders seems interested in becoming vice president. All are adamant that they only want the presidency.

This is despite the fact that abundant problems have affected the legislative elections. The count has yet to be finalized and several political parties have strongly criticized the General Elections Commission for failing to do a good job.

Apparently, the political intrigue is primarily taking place at the elite level, with the grassroots only watching, despite the fact that it should be the people who have the real power.

It is imperative for our political leaders to be aware that have been given a noble mandate by the people. Therefore, being a leader means being honest, and adhering to high standards of ethics and probity.

Leaders should sacrifice themselves for the people. Without such a spirit, a leader will not get the people's trust.
